Overall Crime

• The total number of crimes recorded by police in Scotland in the year ending December 2023 was 302,076, which was 5% higher than the previous year but 2% lower than in 2019.

Violent Crimes

• Non-sexual crimes of violence increased by 4% compared to the previous year and by 4% compared to 2019.
• Specific increases were seen in murder/culpable homicide, death by dangerous driving, and robbery offenses.
• However, serious assault and attempted murder decreased compared to both the previous year and 2019.

Sexual Crimes

• Sexual crimes increased by 2% from the previous year and by 8% compared to 2019.
• Increases were recorded in rape/attempted rape, sexual assault, causing to view sexual activity, and communicating indecently.

Crimes of Dishonesty

Methodology: How the Crime Data Was Gathered

The crime statistics presented in this report were compiled by the Scottish Government from data recorded in Police Scotland’s centralized Source for Evidence Based Policing (SEBP) IT system.

To ensure accurate year-over-year comparisons, the data for each year was extracted from SEBP at consistent annual intervals – the 2023 figures were extracted in January 2024, while prior years’ data was retrospectively extracted at the equivalent point in time for those respective years.

This methodology allows for a like-for-like comparison by capturing a snapshot of the recorded crimes at the same stage each year, accounting for any late amendments or updates to crime records.

While the underlying data originates from Police Scotland’s live reporting system, the statistics are subsequently processed and analyzed by the Scottish Government before being published as official recorded crime figures for the nation.
