Harry Potter Jacobite Steam Train Suspended with Immediate Effect

The beloved Jacobite Steam Train, a staple of the West Highland line and a major tourist attraction featured in the Harry Potter films, has been suspended indefinitely due to a regulatory dispute. The suspension has sent shockwaves through the local community, with businesses bracing for a potential loss of £50 million to the local economy.

West Coast Railways (WCR), the operator of the service, has been forced to cancel trips from March 28th to April 1st, 2024, as it awaits a ruling from the Office of Rail and Road (ORR) on the safety of its hinged-door carriages. The company has applied for an exemption to continue operating while the ORR makes its decision, but the future of the service remains uncertain.

“We share the regulator’s commitment to safety, and our priority now is to work with it to renew permission to enable us to run The Jacobite on the main rail line,” a spokesperson for WCR stated (source). The company has been operating the service for more than 30 years under an exemption allowing the use of hinged-door carriages on main lines.

However, the ORR has taken a firm stance on the issue. “All heritage operators were told several years ago that in order to operate after 31 March 2023, they either needed to fit central door locking or obtain an exemption from us,” an ORR spokesperson said (source). “West Coast Railway’s application for an exemption failed, and they made a claim for judicial review.”

The suspension has sparked outrage among local residents and businesses, who fear the economic impact of losing the service. The Jacobite Steam Train brings up to 700 people per day from Fort William to Mallaig, with some passengers continuing on to Skye and the Isles. The service directly employs over 40 people throughout its April to October operating season.

A petition launched on change.org, titled “Get The Jacobite Steam train back on tracks,” has garnered significant support. The petition states, “As a result of the service being suspended, we now face the reality of a huge loss in tourism, a direct devastating effect on local businesses, and an expected loss of £50m to the local economy.”

The petition also states the WCR lost a High Court challenge against the ORR over the safety of its carriage doors in December. The company argued that the multimillion-pound cost of fitting central locking could “destroy” its business and maintained that its door systems were just as safe. However, the judge dismissed the operator’s case, concluding that the ORR had taken a “justifiable” approach.

As the local community rallies to save the iconic Jacobite Steam Train, the fate of this beloved service and the livelihoods it supports hang in the balance.
